Cynthia Ruchti is a new-to-me author. The description of this book drew me in with the character of Mara, a woman whose husband is working overseas while she struggles to single parent. The back cover of the book hints at a tragedy that plunges her into grief. As that could be any kind of tragedy, I proceeded with choosing this book.
However, when I picked this book to read, I had no idea that it would be a book about a widow. Once I realized that was the trajectory of the book, I almost put it down. In my experiences with widowhood and reading author's depictions of it who are not widows themselves, I have found few worthy of praise. I am so glad I did not set this book aside. This book is a stellar portrayal of the first several months of widowhood. Even more, the novel explores friendships that faithfully walk with the widow through grief. If this makes it sound like it is a sad book, it is far from it. The novel is a beautiful depiction of God’s faithfulness in the midst of grief. This is one of the must-read books of the year.
I received a free copy of the book as part of the Revell Reads blogger team in exchange for my honest opinion.
