Susie Finkbeiner is another new-to-me author this year. I have been seeing amazing reviews of her writing for some time, and when this book came out, I knew I had to read it.
The novel details 3 points of time in the life of a family, 1975, 1988, and 2013, and is narrated through 3 main characters. The catalyst for the novel is the adoption of a little girl from Vietnam, a part of Operation Babylift. The novel explores the life of the family shaped by adoption and how they walk along side supporting their daughter/sister. The novel is leisurely. It’s like a good friend coming to sit beside you telling stories while sipping sweet tea and munching on cookies on a warm summer day.
While adoption is the main theme of the book, it also explores aging, trauma, and the hand of God in all of it. My favorite character was Bruce. The tenderhearted compassion of this father got me every time.
I received a free copy of the book as part of the Revell Reads blogger team. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
