This year I am trying to write poems all on my theme word for the year, hope. This one is exploring Psalm 42:11 in greater detail with adding in lessons from our WBS psalm, Psalm 34. The last stanza adds in a bit of 1 Peter 2 from the sermon. (Written in February 2023)
Why are you downcast, o my soul?
Wild winds whirl deep within
Recklessly whip and flay my skin.
Why are you downcast, o my soul?
The specter of evil haunts me day and night
Clouds and obscures my sight.
Why are you downcast, o my soul?
Pain hounds and hunts me down
Successive sorrows pummel and pound.
Why are you downcast, o my soul?
Faltering faith coaxes me to revive
Seeds of the promises hidden deep inside.
Why are you downcast, o my soul?
Hush my fears in perfect love
Lift my gaze from the present to reality above.
Why are you downcast, o my soul?
Sing anew the songs of trust
Emblazon the memories of His faithfulness.
Why are you downcast, o my soul?
Build me up in the ever living One
Image me now in the radiance of the Son
Hope in the Lord.
